Visualization of Bethe strings formed by ultracold cesium atoms in one-dimensional tubes

Scientists observe Bethe strings in ultracold cesium gas nearly a century after prediction

Audio narration · Coming soon

Nearly 100 years after Hans Bethe predicted them, scientists have successfully created and observed Bethe strings—unusual quantum states—in an ultracold gas of cesium atoms. By cooling the atoms to near absolute zero and confining them in one-dimensional tubes, researchers formed clusters of atoms bound without chemical bonds, some containing six or more particles that can collide without disintegrating.
