Illustration of scanning tunneling microscope probing a single atom for nuclear magnetic resonance

TU Delft Physicists Achieve Nuclear Magnetic Resonance on Single Atom Using STM Probe

Audio narration · Coming soon

Physicists at TU Delft have demonstrated direct nuclear magnetic resonance control over a single 47Ti atom adsorbed on a surface using an ultra-low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. This method employs an Electron-Nuclear Double Resonance measurement scheme, enabling coherent nuclear addressing without electron-nuclear spin hybridization. The advancement could enable atomic-scale quantum memory registers and the development of high-dimensional qudits.
